imagePutting aside the debate over whether the  I in Into is capitalized or not, the movie was terrific.

No spoilers in this post.

Having managed to avoid spoilers going into the theater I was surprised again and again as the movie progressed. It’s very much a character driven story.  Sure, there are some great special effects and some surprisingly detailed depictions of Earth in the 23rd century (more than I think we’ve ever gotten in a Star Trek film).

Because of the massive interweaving references between the previous movies and the original series (even a few subtle references to Enterprise) I am definitely going to have to see it again.

I went to the 2D showing of it so I have no comments on how the 3D is.

Have you seen it? What did you think?

IF you have spoilers please warn people first along with some carriage returns before showing the spoiler. (we need a spoiler tag).

Despite all this we do know one thing.... The Klingon's are coming!

Oh hell! That means they will have to do a re-imagined Kor, Kang, and Koloth for the 3rd move!

just saw it, it was ok- i liked it

they should have made the story line away from earth - more other worlds, more aliens (the crew of the interprise had a few but it was like 3 sec glimpses of them

Did anyone find else something wrong with the big-e caught in earths gravity when it was damn near in lunar orbit?! Shouldn't it have crashed on the Moon instead?! LOL With no power it made dead stop trip from the moon to the earth in 5 minutes.

agreed ! i noticed that too

It's obvious we are Trek fans, with the mountains of information we have at our fingertips and limitless imagination, plot holes the size of "The Doomsday Device" that can navigate safely through unfortunately do happen. I explained how Harrison/Khan look's the way he does because of Section 31 covert operandi, so let's just say that the ships were coasting at a high speed when they came out of warp.

If there is a next time for JJ to direct the next one, they need to hire the Okuda's,(Trek fans know who they are), as technical advisors. Stuff can still look cool when logic supports it, when it doesn't it. We find ourselves talking about it like now...

They went more with "coolness" over believability with this one. Yea, yea, I know the target audience is teenagers, but us grumpy old guys like a good trek movie too. I am starting to see some "Killer B" syndrome in JJ Trek too. As in redoing old been there done that stuff over, and over again.

I honestly think that hollywood doesn't have an original idea left in their heads.

Sadly, so true. When I heard they were going to redo Poltergeist. I was like, why? It's an early Spielberg masterpiece. You can repaint the Mona Lisa, but why should you...

Just like the classic line from Jurassic Park. "Just because you could do it, you didn't stop to think that you should do it". Something like that.

I think all the crap series since the ORIGINAL were aimed at 'teenagers' ....but old people who genuinely grew up with that original can actually enjoy these last 2 movies....

...about bloody time, too....

You'll enjoy it, Brad...I did...so did Terry...

Actually, no. In any 3 body system (Earth, Moon, and Enterprise), where the only force involved is gravity, there are five points known as Lagrange Points, where the smaller body (the Enterprise, in this case), can orbit in equilibrium because the gravitational forces from the other two cancel each other out. The first point, L1, is in between the two larger objects. In the case of the Earth and Moon, the L1 point is about 321,000 km from the Earth: http://esamultimedia.esa.int/docs/edu/HerschelPlanck/EN_13e_L_Points_EarthMoonSystem.pdf The distance from the Earth to the Moon is about 384,000 km.

According to the internet, Sulu says the Enterprise came out of warp 237,000 km from Earth. I have no way of verifying if that is the number he says, but assuming it is, the Enterprise is well inside the L1 point, so it will fall toward the Earth. It still falls too quickly, but it would've taken days for it to reach Earth if it started from a dead stop, which would have been exceptionally boring to watch.

The 2009 movie was an incoherent, nonsensial trollop full of brainless action and story that did not make any sense. Gone are the days where Star Trek was about promoting the idea of diplomacy over brute force, clever plot setups and charming characters. Now it's just explosions, more explosions, shaky-cam and retractable katanas. For the sake of my sanity, I am skipping this one.

I found it to be better than the 2009 movie, mostly because they could skip all the character introductions and go straight into the action.

That said, I found it to be only marginally better because it really was just more of the same as was in 2009 when it came to action.

So, which is more real, Star Trek or Star Wars?

MUWAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAAAAAHAAA!

I prefer ST over SW because in TOS they at least tried to make the science behind it believable. In SW there's too much fantasy, magical stuff. Perhaps JJ should take a much closer look at TOS and at least try to adhere to the original theme. One thing that did bother me though. Supposedly the Enterprise is a Constitution class heavy cruiser too massive to build on the surface let alone launch it but that seems to have been lost on JJ. Not to mention the 'been there done that' syndrome that seems to be prevalent in Hollywood these days. Teenagers want all the bang bang shoot 'em ups and character development is inconsequential.

Not relevant in a set of characters that have been around for 40-odd years....there ain't no-where left for those characters to develop....
