imagePutting aside the debate over whether the  I in Into is capitalized or not, the movie was terrific.

No spoilers in this post.

Having managed to avoid spoilers going into the theater I was surprised again and again as the movie progressed. It’s very much a character driven story.  Sure, there are some great special effects and some surprisingly detailed depictions of Earth in the 23rd century (more than I think we’ve ever gotten in a Star Trek film).

Because of the massive interweaving references between the previous movies and the original series (even a few subtle references to Enterprise) I am definitely going to have to see it again.

I went to the 2D showing of it so I have no comments on how the 3D is.

Have you seen it? What did you think?

IF you have spoilers please warn people first along with some carriage returns before showing the spoiler. (we need a spoiler tag).

Major Stress
Over 2000 meters according to the official scale charts.

Well damn!!!

Major Stress
Still looked tiny compared to the latest "ubership" it is up against.

That will make the Vengeance what? 6000 m. She was at least 2-3 times the size of Enterprise...

Just me personally, Spoiler!!! I thought Kirk climbing inside the M/ARC and kicking the injector was funny as hell. I was like GTFO!!!! here...Really!!! End Spoiler!!!!

The Big-E (though it looked very small compared to the black knight). Got its ass royally handed to it on a silver platter without firing a single shot (Damn Uberships). Least technobabble didnt save the day this time.

Opps, I should have said over 2000 ft. The "Black Knight" is the size of a borg cube!

Now wtf is Vengeance? Is this from the latest movie? Makes my eyes sore.

EDIT: Now i found out, over here its not going to be in cinemas until 6th of June

Rather than impossible, it was improbable. Earth has its own defensive system which they thought would protect them against incoming threats but when that system is bypassed, things start to go to shit. They didn't just have the fleet go off, without a form a defense. Starfleet isn't that foolish, and at this time it was the logical choice of action. So you're telling me if you were in their shoes you wouldn't be comfortable at least when it came to conflicts.(pre-Star Trek). With your large defensive perimeter and yet not even in a state of war.

There is preparedness and there is complacency. No matter whether you are a leading power or not relying on a defensive perimeter alone without backup IMO is nothing short of arrogance, thinking no one in their right mind would attack you. Having a dedicated home fleet separate from those you'd send off anywhere would insure adequate protection in case of just such an attack. Had that extra defensive line been in place the attack might have been thwarted. It would have made for one helluva space battle though, that's for sure. Defeating the home fleet and proceeding with the attack...high drama to say the least.

BTW - That's first time I saw the Vengeance, Where'd that come from?

I loved Star Trek Into Darkness! Luckily, I was able to avoid spoilers. I'll even go as far as saying I loved it better than the first one (in the reboot, that is.)

Dreadnaught Class,

2 times the size,

3 times the speed,

advanced weaponry,

Minimal Crew,

Unlike all federation vessels its built solely for combat:

Yeah Federation won't get a dedicated warship till the Defiant and Soveriegn classes come along way into the TNG era.

Just finished watching it and still have no idea what the 'into darkness' is all about...

How Starfleet was for exploring and not war. Executing people without the benefit of a trial. Spoiler  What Adm. Marcus wanted Kirk to do and park at the edge of KLingon space and drop 72 long range Photon Torpedoes to where Harrison/Khan was hiding out... End Spoiler...

Yes my friend, Vengeance is the new bad in this movie. Steer clear so nothing else would spoil it for you till you see it...

How Starfleet was ...

except that he didn't...so the 'into darkness' was averted?!? Still doesn't make sense.

at dark times, the destruction of Vulcan, the revival of khan in uncertain times and they needed a warrior to combat evil & keep the Klingons contained because there is no longer support from the Vulcans.

Man, you guys really need to use those spoiler tags. This is why I never look at any of these movie threads until after I've seen the movie.

Alrighty, what I perceived as the "Into Darkness" part was not only the exploitation of Khan's genetics, but the secret militarization of Starfleet personified in the Vengeance class vessel. A secret program dedicated to nothing but a monstrous, almost automated killing machine seemed like a pretty obvious criticism of US drones and the increasing role they're playing in warfare. They also threw some Prime Directive controversies in there, like execution without trial (despite Khan already being tried on Earth 200 years ago?). It also seemed like they added a bit of TNG with the "no interfering with native species" part of the Prime Directive, despite Kirk in TOS interfering with native civilization every chance he could. I always thought the Prime Directive was something that came about between TOS and TNG because of that.

But yes, the Into Darkness part was about that if at the highest levels of the military/government don't abide by the rules, what dark paths would be revealed and followed...
