imagePutting aside the debate over whether the  I in Into is capitalized or not, the movie was terrific.

No spoilers in this post.

Having managed to avoid spoilers going into the theater I was surprised again and again as the movie progressed. It’s very much a character driven story.  Sure, there are some great special effects and some surprisingly detailed depictions of Earth in the 23rd century (more than I think we’ve ever gotten in a Star Trek film).

Because of the massive interweaving references between the previous movies and the original series (even a few subtle references to Enterprise) I am definitely going to have to see it again.

I went to the 2D showing of it so I have no comments on how the 3D is.

Have you seen it? What did you think?

IF you have spoilers please warn people first along with some carriage returns before showing the spoiler. (we need a spoiler tag).

Dr Guy
G_Bison, but Enterprise predates both Nero and Star Trek, so the timeline should not be changed for things that occurred 25 years prior to Star Trek, as that was when Nero burst into the past.

Oh, I agree with what you said and yes, Enterprise predates Nero's incursion but, what I was saying you have to look overall at what has happened.

The Klingon's been having a round of bad luck dealing with Humans, especially with what happened with the Augments and the retro-virus that caused Klingons to look human. Also, only a colony was affected, not the entire race...

Nero shows up, was a "guest" of the Empire till he escaped and took a good chunk of their fleet.(Deleted scene from the movie where he was captured by the Klingons.)

Now spoilers. The reason why Khan looked the way he did was Section 31 can't have a 300 hundred year old Indian running around and doing "things" especially since the Federation knew nothing about. He was altered to blend in, remember last time anyone saw him was back in the 1990's and the computers would flag his image.

The other thing that will probably play out in the next one is that the Klingon's are/will be pissed because of the fight/slaughter of Klingon troops on their homeworld. Because Nero destroyed a good portion of their fleet, it look liked Praxis, the Klingon moon. Was overmined because of the deficit of ships caused by Nero, Praxis was destroyed in Star Trek VI. But judging by the new film, Praxis is already destroyed. Either that or JJ got severe continuity error going on and left the moon destroyed rather than normal...

Shit.  TWOK is my favorite Trek movie, even when I was a little kid it beat out whales and time travel.

This is the third Trek in a row where the Enterprise beats a super ship of doom by boarding it, and it's by far the worst job of the three.  They finish it off by raping Ricardo Montalban's rotting corpse with that atrocity of a Khan in a grossly inferior plot.  Zero imagination to the main plot, just rinse and repeat and throw some completely nonsensical crap together for a bit of special effects.  Minus the badguy being Khan(really, you can't come up with a new badguy?), it was a decent flick till the Vengeance showed up, from there it was just shit.  It shreds the Enterprise in seconds, throwing out firepower decades ahead of it's time.  So they designed new technologies for and built a dreadnought, that could beat the Nerada...  The Enterprise is the best they could build at the time and they've managed a ship dozens of times more powerful in less than a year?  Oh right, Khan is some omniscient badass now and just whipped up advanced new technologies inside a year...  How were hundreds of these guys ever defeated in the first place?  The further TWOK references thrown into the thing were terrible and out of character, paying homage to a movie you're insulting is just further insult.  I like the last movie, I like the Transformers movies, Fringe is in my top ten shows of all time.  I'm not a snob with high standards that thinks everything the guy does is just crap for mass consumption.  I expect entertainment from my entertainment, not art.  I still left the theater pissed off at the asshole.  If you can turn your brain off enough to enjoy this movie, you need to be careful you don't stop pumping blood by accident.

What Psychoak said!

on Jun 05, 2013

While my assessment of STID is not as passionate as Psychoak's, I have to say I pretty much agree with him.

@psychoak: To be fair they go shot into critical system while in warp. That is why Enterprised seemed outclassed.

Don't expose a superior mind to the equations of phasers, warp theory, trans warp beaming theories and torpedoes because they will find mistakes, alter the equation and enhance there outcome.

There is also the fact that the ships size and small crew meant more capacitors and energy reserves were available for other things.

I'm still waiting for a 21st century special: Khan vs the Borg.

How about Tribbles vs the Borg ....

Cute and cuddly crazy-fast self-replicating and assimilating fuzzballs? The greatest danger the universe has ever seen, methinks...

Tribbles win. Hands down. Especially now that Bones messed with them in the new timeline. Kahn the Tribble!

More like the Borg assimilate them into their collective, and become completely harmless after they breed themselves into starvation.

"Karn the Tribble".

In Aussie slang you might hear at the footy....something that sounds like "Karn the Crows"....an abreviation of "Come on, the Crows" ....

Tribbles win. Hands down.
