imagePutting aside the debate over whether the  I in Into is capitalized or not, the movie was terrific.

No spoilers in this post.

Having managed to avoid spoilers going into the theater I was surprised again and again as the movie progressed. It’s very much a character driven story.  Sure, there are some great special effects and some surprisingly detailed depictions of Earth in the 23rd century (more than I think we’ve ever gotten in a Star Trek film).

Because of the massive interweaving references between the previous movies and the original series (even a few subtle references to Enterprise) I am definitely going to have to see it again.

I went to the 2D showing of it so I have no comments on how the 3D is.

Have you seen it? What did you think?

IF you have spoilers please warn people first along with some carriage returns before showing the spoiler. (we need a spoiler tag).

I am no Trekkie at all (but of course I know the original Enterprise series with Shatner and Mimoy), more a Starwars fan (Ep. IV - VI) but I must say this movie was way better than the last 3 Star Wars movies together...

Shit....that's not hard....didn't have a muppet-on-a-stick sword fight....

I liked it. Saw it last night. Great effects, funny parts all through.

Scotty was hilarious!

Having seen the Wrath of Khan movie, I was a tad confused about a few things, but all in all, I enjoyed it.

Can someone say of this new film is a bit more...I dunno..."mature"? If the characters/story are more compelling.

I'm obviously a ST fan but I do have common sense and went to see the 2009 movie expecting nothing more than a cool sci-fi action flick with the Star Trek label stuck on it as a formality. And I was still disappointed. Plot was senseless (not that most other ST films are much better in this regard), characters were bland, Kirk was a generic "action hero", the Nokia product placement was in atrociously bad taste, scenes like Spock/Uhura making out and Kirk needlessly firing at the doomed villain's ship made no sense and were just inserted to blindly adhere to the pattern of a Hollywood blockbuster (we need a kissing scene, we need a shooting scene). Rehashed Star Wars scenes and filming style...

I really have trouble understanding why so many consider this film good (either as ST or generally), especially compared to the previous movies not counting the likes of Nemesis which is merely the precursor to the decline carried on by 2009. The first 5 minutes felt great but ultimately ST09 couldn't even provide the basic entertainment of a cool space battle (like Wrath of Khan or First Contact).[/quote]

Ok, finally saw  it and it was much better than 2009 I thought. ST09 was shit (imho) but Into Darkness was kinda good so there. Make of it what you will.

The SW derpiness is still there but that can't be helped until there's a new director. Why does Abrams have such a hard on for moving platforms and heights? Not to mention random cooky aliens that have no purpose in life except to act as background imagery.

I saw the Imax 3d.  I did not really notice a marked improvement over the old 2d, but my son was thrilled.

Since no spoilers, I will not state what I did not like.   As a movie it was great.  As a ST movie, I had problems with it.

Don't worry, use the spoiler tags!

For instance, the redoing of the Wrath of Khan warp drive radiation death scene. It's nice to know that in the future, you can still just kick things hard enough and they'll get fixed. There's a fine line between homage and copycat, and I felt that the scene, although well-intentioned, fell a bit on the copycat/blasphemy side.

That and I thought they had already established in canon how the Klingons got their head ridges in a later timeframe through the genetic manipulation/plague deal, and that around the time of Kirk there were no head ridges. The head armor was fine (space dwarves?), but having the actual head ridges bugged me.

@ jackswift85 I agree, but Nero's involvement from the first movie has caused all kinds of chaos in the empire. Did you notice the Moon Praxis...?

Ah!  Thank you. I will have to play with those to get it right before risking a spoiler.

Yes on the first.  I was very disappointed with that.  Also the ethnicity.

On the second, I had not though of that until you mentioned it.  But yes, that can only be considered a blooper.  Enterprise predates Star Trek, and that was detailed in that series.

but Nero's involvement from the first movie

G_Bison, but Enterprise predates both Nero and Star Trek, so the time line should not be changed for things that occurred 25 years prior to Star Trek, as that was when Nero burst into the past.

Jackswith85 - I got the spoiler down, but the interesting thing (for the mods) is that while it works in the forums, it does not work on the Joeuser site.

Thanks again.

Logged in and posting via JU...they work here.

If they did not I'd be obliged to delete them all....as Brad said specifically "no spoilers in this post" ...

Yes, they work in the forums, if you create them on the JU Site.  But it does not blank them if you read the comment on the JU site.

Not a real problem.  I thought I would just point that out in case anyone was to switch over to read the comments.  Forewarned is fore-armed!

Just saw it. Loved it. Yeah I know its not old school Trek but it was fun to watch.

In IMAX 3D!

I felt like I was watching a definitive Star Wars movie with Star Trek characters awkwardly "forced" into it.

I'm referring to the newer Star Wars prequel trilogy specifically.  From the way it was shot, to the special effects, overall tone, etc etc.  Some action scenes felt like they were outright copied from Attack of the Clones.  The random aliens seen on the ship that didn't appear anywhere in Star Trek before (as opposed to my being able to identify *any* species part of the federation at this time).

Being a long time Star Trek fan (and not so much Star Wars), it felt far more like a generic Sci-Fi action movie with a definitive Star Wars feel.  Not a great combo in my book.

Yes it does...see comment #70.

If they did not I would have deleted them all....
