Brad Wardell's site for talking about the customization of Windows.

As we reach the end of June we’re racing ahead towards trying to get an alpha out sometime in July along with the beta at PAX.

Here are some screenshots of where things are (some old, some new):

Note: Shadowing isn’t in yet so these are not representative of what the final game (or even the beta) will look like.

Cities exist on the map itself. Clicking anywhere on the city will bring up the city menu.

Players can zoom in and out as they see fit.  Players design roads ala Simcity but they are built automatically by workers (similar to Civ IV).

Players can zoom in very close to cities. Eventually you’ll be able to see your population at work. It’s purely cosmetic but it’ll cool to watch your cities grow and thrive.

The tactical battles are very different than what we’ve seen before in these types of games.  The best way I can describe the battles is that they’re tactical with XCom being a major inspiration but designed to be relatively short.  Depending on how well they turn out, we may make the tactical battles an optional mini-game that people can play online if they just want to play a simple arena-style strategy game.

Battle_Close_Up
Players will be able to zoom in and watch the battles very close up.  This screenshot is of an internal technology demo so it’s designed to show you what our goal is.

We’ve been hesitant to show too many screenshots until the shadowing is in.  Those of you familiar with this stuff know how weak modern games look if you turn off the shadows.  We’ve been working on a shadowing system that scales really well but still looks good.

Also this week we’ve been developing a new type of font system that is compatible with DirectX 9 (we’re not using DirectX 10 or 11 and won’t be until Windows XP is very legacy).  Ironically, DirectX 11 has a pretty decent font system but few cards support it.  But the font system we’re doing will let us have really cool alpha blended fonts on a variety of textured backgrounds.  If you look at most PC games, they either have few fonts or have them on a black background. But we want players to (optionally) be able to read a lot of information on the world they’re creating. Each game will play very differently.

The beta version should be ready in around 60 days. Hard to believe that we’re finally getting close after all this time.  Players who pre-order it will get access to the betas and qualify to have access to the alpha version.

More to come.

I didn't even notice the spider in the second shot GW. Good eyes, he looks like my avatar.

This just made my day!

Another question - are the trees "done" yet? A friend of mine was looking at the screenshots and commented that he really didn't like the trees in the zoomed in city. (He did really like the combat one and the tech demo one though!)

Brad, thanks for keeping us fed   Y'all keep saying not to take the screenshots as indicating the final visual quality, and I understand, but honestly they look wonderful to me already.  I'm a bit easy to please, I suppose, but you still get a sale either way.

Aw man, I think I just ruined part of my keyboard from drooling...

I'm like a kid at Christmas who can't get to sleep the night before. I can hardly wait. Unfortunately, it's a multi month wait rather than one sleepless night

Wonderful wonderful update! I am happy for at least a week!

The city looks awesome!

Maybe we could just fill in some more details on the plains and the coasts.

Overall really cool!

I think I usually check this page something like four or five times a day hoping to catch a new update.  I also get a kick out of analyzing the pattern of posting times and trying to estimate a probability that there might be a new update coming the next day

I was really hoping that there'd be an update today . . . and then I saw it and it just knocked my socks off.  This game is looking GREAT!  Keep up the great work!!

Looks pretty pretty. The first picture makes me wonder though, is the map 3d or are mountains and hills just bumbs in the landscape like in CivIV?

Or will they be much bigger and you can scroll around like in AoW?
There are lots of answers to your question in this forum. Just read the previous announcement - that about detail levels! We will see however, what map size will be available in the beta. However I don't think it would be important to have a huge map in early betas. Of course it will be important in the late ones. The overall strategy of huge worlds will definitely differ from the strategy on the small worlds.

The question was not about the size of worlds but about the size of tactical battlefields.

I remember brad saying the battles could get quite big, with up to thousands of troops. I don't think it would show all of them on the tactical screen but zoomed in it would be sweet to see all those soldiers pound on each other. Any ways..I think the size of the tacital battle map will vary on army size and terrain.

Sweeeet. Great work Art dudes and dudettes.

I like the hedge walls. And then the inner walls being wooden in the second screen. Lot so of cool little details here. The ruins outside the town etc. The building of roads is an awesome feature, nice way to do it.

Look forward to seeing my serfs toiling away to make me powerful! Muhahahahaha.. <sputter> <gasp> <cough> ahem.

Thanks FB! Appreciate the updates. Time to get a Y2K countdown timer and use it for Elemental!

Like tomorrow? Just the main menu of the game! The options don't even need to work yet.

You are forgiven because of cool screenshots, interesting info (like the possible mini-game) and that I'm distracting myself with Blood Bowl.

Anyways, thank you for the info.

updated screenshots?    I guess I should compare to the originals.   The bottom two look pretty much the same.   (I thought we were supposed to ignore that battle scene because of the grid )

Too bad about the DX10/DX11...LOTRO used it in a great way IMO without overhauling the graphics, but adding some very nice SFX tweaks.  I think we're past the point where graphics cards can handle that sort of thing.  Don't know how DX11 will really perform, but I'm not expecting much...every time they say it'll perform better and it never seems to.

Alas, I have seen some total disasters of DX10 ports so I'm not surprised...just hopeful you might thing about adding a dx10/11 renderer after the game is shipped.  Then you'd have time to work on it without impacting the normal production cycle, which would probably work better overall.

And hey, are you guys and gals using XAudio 2?  Just curious on that one...doesn't bother me either way, but it sounds like good tech.
