We don't generally allow politics on the forums.  With the obvious exception of The Political Machine.  The Political Machine - The Power of the Presidency Can Be Yours! Forums But the world trade situation is probably something worth discussing provided people can avoid assuming "the other" are stupid or evil or greedy or whatever.   Now, I'm a child of Michigan USA.  Detroit area.  That means cars.  And I can say, regardless of political association, t...

Brad’s hand youth system. Hand on left: untreated. Hand on right: one day of Brad’s youth system. The secret ingredient: Bee stings!

I do my first Spring inspection on the new hive.  The bees are really gentle so I don't bother wearing gear.  No problem. But when I go to put the hive back togoether, one young bee has managed to get stuck on the outside. Knowing that she isn't likely to find her way back in (she can't fly yet) I take her on my finger and try to get her to walk back in the front.  She insists on walking on my arm.   Eventually I gently blow to get her to move back towa...

It's funny how Twitter started out claiming it was a messaging service.  And yet, over the years, it has become as moderated, often with a political bias to its moderation, as any community forum. I wonder if it might be worth putting in effort on JoeUser.com .  Before there was Facebook or Twitter, we had JoeUser which was intended to be a place where people could easily share their thoughts with friends.

When it comes to dogs my views can be summed up by this incident this weekend... I am at the store and I need a USB-C cable.  They're $9.99.  I call my wife and tell her "I dunno, $10 for a cable, can you just bring the one we have downstate with you?" However, before I had left the store I bought a $9.99 "Super Premium" dog bone.   Priorities. Post your picture of your dog here. We have two dogs. First, the new puppy: This is an "English Creme" re...

One of the challenges I face in my role as the CEO of a company is that I always live in the future.  My job is to project things that will happen 1 year, 3 years, 5 years from now.  As a result, I tend to worry about things all the time. Andy Grove, the former CEO of Intel, wrote a book I highly recommend called Only the Paranoid Survive . It's been a boon and a curse to me because I have learned a lot from it but at the same time, it has resulted in me constantly focusing on th...

I have 3 children. I love them to pieces. But dogs? Obviously not in the same league but holy cow there is just something so touching in their unconditional devotion. Sometimes, especially with the smarter ones, their similarities to small children can be uncanny. For instance, my 6 year old Entlevucher brings her stuffed dinosaur to bed every night, she just sleeps with it. Who else here feels the same?

I don't know how common this is with dogs but my dog, an Entlebucher mountaint dog, has a fairly complex moral system when it comes to food.  Namely, she seems to have an internal rule set on what it is okay for her to take food. Here's an example of my dog's morality in action.  If my wife brings me a plate of cheese and crackers, she can set it right in front of me and the dog.  I could get up, leave the room and come back without fear that she would take it.  Howev...

I think long before global climate change matters one way or the other that the fate of humanity will be determined by how we make use of strong AI. In the near term (next 5 to 10 years) we’re going to see a huge swath of jobs disappear.  This past week Panera bread added a kiosk to let me order my food.  Wendy’s and McDonalds are already heading that way too.  Transportation is next.  My Tesla Model X with auto-pilot is on the way. I should have it in the next mon...

My wife is a mathematician by training but her wit is second to none. In a different life, I think she’d been a good comedy writer.  So I’ve decided to start tracking some of her quips. This is all from this morning:   Me: You’re too good a cook. You’re making me fat. Deb: And if I was a bad cook, you’d be complaining about that instead. Me: And? Deb: You’re like the Kobayashi Maru of food. -- Deb: Every time we travel now we have to find peopl...

The Scarab brand has been reintroduced this year with the launch of 3 new jet boats. These jet boats are the spiritual (and in many respects, literal) successor to the Seaddoo line of Jetboats that BRP discontinued at the end of 2012. layout), the 195 (a 19 foot model) and the 215 (a 21 foot model with 2 Rotax engines). As a current (and happy) owner of a 2011 Seadoo 150 (and occasional user of the Seadoo Challenger), I can say that the general build quality of the new Scarab line is s...

I don't know about you but when I get time off of work, I end up thinking about lots of random things. In no particular order: Very proud of the people my kids are becoming. 20 year wedding anniversary is in a few months. Gotta start thinking about what to do about that. Very excited about some January announcements Stardock will be making I wish I had more time for skinning I am addicted to Battlefield 4. I suck at Battlefield 4 I am grateful for the friends I have. I wish I ...

In recent discussions, it's become clear that many people aren't really that familiar with the US constitution.  This is a shame because it's actually not very long. The constitution is broken into two parts.  The first part lists the explicit powers the government has.  The second part are the amendments, two of which are designed to make it bloody clear that only the explicitly named powers listed are things the federal government can do. The recently passed AC...

This Summer I've put some time into putting together an emergency kit. I wouldn't call us "preppers" by any stretch of the imagination but I think it's a good idea to have some basic plan in the event that something catastrophic happened to our infrastructure (like severe disruption to the power grid or something).   During the process of figuring out what sorts of supplies we should have, I have found numerous Internet forums that discuss this (they call their kits "bug out ...
