Stardock was showing off two games at this year's E3.  Galactic Civilizations II, of course, and a new game called Society.  Society won't go into beta until after Galactic Civilizations II ships.  But you can check out some details on it:

Wow! Its free!!!!? It looks incredibly addictive and at the same-time heart-breaking when someone demolishes your empire while you are sleeping. I can see many people's lives being taken over and jobs being lost as they dont turn up for work while they are nursing their creation.

Wow!!! That looks great, and it's going to be free? Wow. I am certainly looking foward to this, it looks really addictive.

How are you supposed to destroy another empire?
If you need 75% of the map to win with 30,000 provinces you need 22,500 provinces with 7,500 taken.
That means you have to destroy 2500 players to 3-province-empires. And no more than 2501 can play at the same time (for 8 months long).
And you still need a big alliance for alliance victories.. and some people really hate big alliances (or clans).

I guess if you hate big alliances, then you won't win in this game
