Brad Wardell's site for talking about the customization of Windows.

When I look at the people who have gotten "canceled" over things they posted on the Internet, it's disproportionately GenXers.

Why is that?

I think it's the awkward timing. GenX grew up on BBSes and Usenet which were a free for all.  It wasn't until the Millennials and later GenZ came on the scene that the raunchy, insensitive, or intentionally trolling behaviors of GenX got us into trouble.

Remember one troll who made alt.history.what-if pure hell to read as they would spam 50 to 100 OT post at a time.

Those were the days.

Yep, that checks out, as a GenXer I can confirm that makes sense --- and if you think back to as recently as 2014, there was still ZERO censorship in most places. Just ten years ago, popular blockbuster Hollywood movies still had words in them that will now literally get you fired today.

Historians will look back at this time in the Anglo-Saxon world as something akin to the Cultural Revolution in China.

WHICH is actually surprisingly relevant for me at the moment, because I was just banned from the GC IV forums on steam for asking why there are now female leaders named "Richard" and "Jeff" in the game. I was surprised to find out that this was a feature and not a bug. In defence of your moderators, I did ask 3 different times and got a bit frustrated as they kept giving me a boilerplate non-answer and then locking the thread. In my defence, I used no foul language.

Not cool to suddenly change all the human women to having men's names AFTER I buy the game and have played the game for well over 2 hours so now I have no chance to return it -- that would be like buying a blue car and then the dealer comes to your house in the middle of the night and paints it pink and then bans you from the car lot when you call to complain.

Life is too short, so I have started returning games at the first hint of post-modern neo-marxist nonsense. Between my wife, kids and work, I have so little time for my PC gaming hobby that I am not going to spend it being mad at overtly political agendas being inserted into games and ham-fisted attempts to normalize politically-driven nonsense like women being named "Jeff."

Anyways, I am not going to beg for my forum access back (there are plenty of other places on the internet to complain) but I am going to please ask you to change the game back to the default of sex-specific names for human males and females. Leave it in the game as a toggle for all I care, but again, life is too short for this. The default should be NORMAL. No more women named Richard as the default. If people want something abnormal like that, they should have to mod it in or change the toggle themselves, not the other way around.

I read somewhere one time that you worked out a deal with the Star Control guys by trading honey for mead or something like that. I figure a regular guy like that has to see the reasonableness of the point I am making.

In any event, if you are not going to change it back, do the right thing and refund the game.

My little girl (who, unsurprisingly, has a female name) just had a nightmare, need to go.

Sure does.  BTW your second 'troll' account has been removed.

My experience of 'Normal' has had almost 70 years to develop.  I for one would not want to see things altered just to appease GenX's [or any other generation's] concept of sense and sensibilities.

If it's currently quirky to give people or entities odd names then so be it....  Pretty sure the likes of Frank Zappa [baby boomer] didn't get into a sweat when he named his children.

Always remember...adapt or die.

Actually calling his kids what he did was very controversial most wanting access to whatever recreational substance he was on.

In regards to the issue reported. Jeff and Richard are listed in the FlavorText_StringTable.xml and UnitNamesText.xml as human male names. If your seeing it in your game then please provide a save. Soaking 100 turns and letting the game generate a number of human citizens I was not able to replicate the issue. Also, note any mods you maybe using as well as what version of the game your running and any DLC so it can be investigated.
