I’m putting this up so that it’s not lost to time. This is an article I wrote for Computer Games Magazine about my son playing World of Warcraft back when he was 8 years old and how he played it differently from adults.

I miss feeling that way about an MMO. I remember when I played Everquest for the first time, I have never experienced anything like it. One, I had almost never even used a computer at that point, let alone played such a massive game. It was just fun to explore. Somehow that got lost in me. I still get that way when I get a new Bethesda game, but not to the same degree.
I think the first game to get me like that when I was young, where I felt totally immersed in the character and world, was Quest for Glory 1 (still one of the best RPG series ever designed if you haven't experienced it yet). Once MMO's rolled in, it was Shadowbane that captivated me the most.
I get the same joy watching my 6 year old son (also Alex) play Minecraft. He has built an entire huge city--he recreates places like McDonalds and WalMart, has designed something he calls "Cops and Robbers" with a jail, built fantastic roller coaster, wired redstone into circuits and many things I have no clue about in the game. The cool thing is that he knows where everything is in the game and can use the keyboard/mouse like any good American kid should.

the funny thing... the things he does, Is what i did in an MMO for 8+ years... SWG.. Had tons of stuff you could do with out ever killing a thing. Hanging out in cantina's dancing. hunting, making items, giving directions, tours, hanging out with new people.. If more people played like your son.. the MMO's would be much more interesting
