Brad Wardell's site for talking about the customization of Windows.

To say we were pleased with the reaction Elemental got at the Penny Arcade Expo would be an understatement.  Despite the game only being in alpha, users seemed to really like the direction we’re heading.

Some of the features that really got people going included:

Family Trees and Succession.  That is, one of the strategies for victory is to quietly arrange marriages so that your family is in the path of succession when sovereigns start getting killed.  In Galactic Civilizations, succession often seemed random (it wasn’t but it came across that way). So the Arceans would “surrender” to the Thalan even though you had been helping the Arceans.  In Elemental, if a sovereign surrenders (goes into exile) his kingdom might be divided up amongst heirs belonging to the various houses.

The planned number of players allowed in a game being 32. We only plan to have 12 “canon” factions just like in Galactic Civilizations.  But we also plan on letting people create their own (which we think will be typical).  If you’ve ever played Master of Magic or Master of Orion, you probably have an inkling of the kind of race customization we have in mind.

The consequences of magic on strategy. Because of the engine, we plan on letting people alter the world a great deal. Later in the game, the arms race on magic will become increasingly apparent.

Modding. People at PAX were able to see the modding tools first hand. Hearing us talking about modding is one thing, seeing highly polished, functional modding tools built into the game long before the game is released lets people see just how serious we are about letting people create their own worlds and share their creations with others.

Now, all that said, the beta, which is due out in the next 2 weeks, is NOT going to be fun.  Let me reiterate that: IT WILL NOT BE FUN. IT WILL BE HORRIBLE. WE ARE TURNING OFF THE MAIN GRAPHICS ENGINE.

BELOW ARE THINGS YOU WILL NOT SEE IN BETA 1 OF ELEMENTAL:

Elemental_TileEditor_ZoomedHarbor
This is the built in modding tool. You take these, classify it, and then share it on the Internet within the game. Then, players can optionally have these mods inserted into their games.

Elemental_Spellcraft_Life

BETA 1 will not have the magic system in it. At least, not until November.

Elemental_1251919228

The graphics engine in Elemental will not be enabled until January.  Why? Because if the game is good it should be able to be fun without super good graphics.

Double post.

Okay... so magic, graphics, and fun are not in the beta.

What is in the beta? And no, don't say bugs!

BRING IT ON I SAY!

Sounds pretty bare bones. What exactly will we be testing for in betas 1a and 1b?

Engine.  Does it crash?  Does it run well?  Can it survive alt-tabbing?  Etc etc.

I hope not.  I was under the impression we will be primarily testing gameplay features.  I haven't read about them wanting people for the purpose you stated, though I am sure they will be glad to accept bug reports of this nature.

Unless more is missing, I was under the impression there will be a playable war game even in the first betas.

Yet, you go on to say that the reason you wont include graphics in the first few beta builds is because it should be fun without them. The cloth map allows us to implement new features quickly and easilly (read: without making the 3d assets for them). If a new feature sucks, we can remove it without having wasted time on the assets.

Well add "new features", most likely gameplay (i mean, what else is there in a video game without fancy graphics?), to the list of stuff we get to test. Further does his wording in regard to the fun and clothmap (namely the use of the word "should") indicate that weather or not the cloth map is fun still has to be verified. Sounds like a job for the beta testers.

Iirc, neither MoM or MoO1 had race customization at all ... but I know what you meant, cool Seriously, I can't wait to get the faction customization in.  The plan ATM is to give the player X 'customization points' that can be spend on the 3 major parts of your faction: the sovereign's stats, the civilizations stats, and your magical preferences. You can imagine the HUGE range of possibilities with such a system...it's going to be nuts

Wow.  I can't wait to play with that.  Although it will be super cool I worry slightly about multi-balance (Even though I'm mostly a solo player).  But just being able to create a super powerful channeler and leave the other two wanting..good times!

Dang, I can't wait!

OMG THIS IS GREAT NEWS! .... Wanna play it now!

The game will be playable, for the most part. There will be bugs, there will be crashes, there will probably be people with comps that plain dont like Elemental in the current state. My advice, don't expect much.

Master of Magic did in fact support some level of player customisation. I can't recall if it let you choose different bonuses for your civilization's race but it certainly let you choose the exact makeup of your spellbook library. So your Mage's spellbook might have had 3 Life spellbooks and 6 Chaos books while your opponents might've been 6 Nature, 2 Death and 1 Sorcery.

For people worried about the "OMG BETA WON'T BE FUN" thing, Frogboy said the first Demigod beta wouldn't be fun either. It was! He's just trying to make sure nobody has unreasonable expectations.

Next 2 weeks? Bring it on.

High loyalty + good spies + strong bloodlines = fun. I plan to kill off and fracture all the major players just so I can revel in the chaos of being the only functional kingdom in a sea of duchies at least once. After that of course just use a few well placed alliances to start a world war /evil grin

On a serious note I love the way you guys are down to earth enough to put us through a "horrible" beta to iron out any bugs in the game instead of just polishing it and fixing the bugs with post-release patches like many other companies do.  Shows true dedication and dare I say love for the game.

I don't need magic to beat anybody. I'm that good...

on Sep 08, 2009

I don't know what to say... the succession thing and the race/sovereign customization are more than I would've ever hoped for.  Sounds very cool.

Hell, masquerading as an early glimpse at paradise.

Somehow, I can just sense that 64-entity games will be a reality at some point down the line...probably in terms of the 64bit support for maps large enough to where it all jives.  The only question is how long it takes to manifest after release...

It will be oh so interesting how Elemental comes up shape up versus the likes of Dominions III!
