Brad Wardell's site for talking about the customization of Windows.

The new WinCustomize is going to be a radical departure from what we have today.

In the web 2.0 age, we can do a lot of interesting things that should greatly improve the navigation of the site. The days of clicking, waiting for the page to load, clicking, waiting for the page to load and so forth will go away.

Instead, the site will feel more akin to a desktop application. Want to see the most popular skinners, click on tab and it'll expand to show it.

The site will end up being far cleaner, far faster, and far easier to use than what we have today.

I was being serious, starkers.

So was I.  However, the point I was making is that funtionality will take precedence over site skinning and theming. OK, so the wallpaper and curtains was a bit flippant, but that's just me.

As long as it's optional, I'd hate to be stuck on a page and 'forced' to wait for movies/players etc to load.

If I wanted music, I'd load Nero. ... besides, the idea was to 'speed up', not slow it down even more

As I understand it, HTML5 embeds such things into the page itself, thus doing away with the need for media players and the like to slow things down.  Furthermore, this is Web2 we're talking about here, which is crisper, cleaner and much faster at presenting content, so page renders shouldn't be such and issue.

I too will load my media player to listen to music when I want, but the idea of having embedded music, video and announcements is to give users a richer, more rewarding WC experience.  For example, spoken announcements on upcoming new features to programs and WC would have a more personal feel that's more explanatory... and tutorials would give a more hands-on approach than just the written word.  Music would be just an added extra that may give users something they've not heard before... or something happening in the background if they forget to load Nero, WMP or whatever. And if it's user activated rather than on by default, everybody can be happy.

I believe you missed what I meant altogether, mate.

There wouldn't be any skinning at all of the site. Therefore speed would not be affected at all.

The functionality of the site (for the individual...and visitors would not be able to arrange modules, only subscribers) would be enhanced this way.

Sorry if my meaning was unclear from my writing.

Actually, I believe that going back and forth about this is pointless as it was probably decided before the first post about this topic was made.

Cool starkers

the screenshot looks nice., but there are two things that i would wish to see a big change:

1. Personal Home Page: It needs more options to customize it

2. A new Winki: You know.., i've seen some cool 3d vertions of winki by D. Arnaez that makes me think that winki needs a moke-up! a new style....

more or less along the thoughts I had for the Personal pages,  Posted here Post.

What snow And I were talking about in this thread, was the Old WC themes we used to be able to use here on WC. You could choose the way WC looked Colors, buttons etc, from a list of predetermined Themes in a drop down menu. While it may be considered eye candy to some,  a darker theme for me would add funtionality, as it wouldnt hurt the peepers so much.

Jafo mumbles something incomprehensible about functioning admin tools.....

on Jan 17, 2009

I hope it won't be an unlinkable blob of site.

Flash or not, I hate sites that don't allow users to link to pages within site...

Tailsgirl likes talking like this, HG showed me hehe

....and yes, fix those Admin tools, so Jafo can fix my dang guestbook

I called it "Sort of a Video Professor" about skinning and a way to revitalize the WinWikipedia.

Yeah ID, a seperate section with movies would be good, like tutorial video's, now I like that idea

That'd be awesome, but I'd have to think that videos would take up more resources on this site, unless it's moderated and restricted to tutorial, news, etc. There are plenty of video hosting sites that can be used to upload vid-tuts and then you can embed them in a post here.

As for the new direction of the site, you had me at "faster."

sViz, I was thinking that the Vids could be put elsewhere...like on the Wiki...what I.D. was referring to was more along the lines of "news" and I think the more the better. The Wiki vids could be "linked" to the Wiki, not necessarily "in it"...not sure I'm explaining it well. My knowledge is in medicine, not web design...I was only suggesting what I'd seen elsewhere.

I like the screen shot, looks a liitle like WB. Comparing this to the current site presentation it looks a lot better.

Yeah ID, a seperate section with movies would be good, like tutorial video's, now I like that idea

I guess then that instead of this, "There is currently no text in this page, you can search for this page title in other pages or edit this page". we would get this, There is currently no video in this page, you can search for this page title in other pages or edit this page".

AND besides my persnickety attitudes regarding unnecessary video content, totally appalling and unwanted interactions, difficulties in uploading blinds, etc. What really burns me is that WB has outsourced the "insert/edit image" function to third party vendors. I can't tell how many times I've wanted to upload a picture of the problem or even a possible solution for someone elses difficulty and the process entails something like this.

1. create a jpg. 2. goto the flicker (or someother) site. 3. create an account (pure BS). 4. upload the jpg. 5. copy the tag. 6. go back to the WC site (what was the question again?) 7. click on "insert/edit image" button. 8. paste the tag. 9 click OK and, oh wait, 10. enable third party cookies. (is there also flash lurking here in the background?). 11. do steps 7 through 9 again and 12. disable third party cookies. Understand why I don't inset pictures with my questions now???

there has to be some way to do this easier. I just clicked on the "insert/edit image" button and what I have is some white square with no content (great) (oh, now it just timed out into a null page and won't go away). I recognize that the ability to upload a picture without moderation could be abused by some but a picture is worth a thousand words. consideration would be appreciated.

Yeah, notice I said seperate section, so there would be no loading/waiting unless you opted to go to that section <-- As long as he's still on the page, I'm ok with it.

Me thinks all this banter is mainly moot.  I think the decisions have been made and the format is basically done.IMHO.
