Brad Wardell's site for talking about the customization of Windows.

With the Impulse launch this week along with The Political Machine 2008 release, it's been a busy week. But for our next magical trick, we're also releasing the first significant update to Galactic Civilizations II: Twilight of the Arnor.  You can get a preview of some of the changes here.

You will need to use Impulse to get it. Go here to get Impulse.

If you have refreshed the xml data, try changing the server.

Tools - settings - Internet - go to the top drop down box and select the other server, there's two, change it to the other one - click ok at the bottom. Then refresh xml data again. Sometimes changing server you are using will sort it out.

It is there, they put it up yesterday.

Try running Impulse in XP Compatibility mode to do the update.

What OS are you running btw?

I updated with SDC. Thanks.

btw: Do I need to install "heightmaps" for ToA? Or does it just benefit Dl & DA? How large is it? (I seem to remember seeing somewhere that it is on the order of 100mgs)

I'm curious (for future updates) if anyone who installed ToA via CD have any issues with Impulse. I'll probably test this myself soon. (At least I'll know if it recogizes my ToA install.)

thanks again, can't wait to play tomorrow!

It mostly only benefits DL & DA, and it's very large.  If you're only going to play TA, you should be able to skip it.

Personally, I am not a huge gamer. I don't have that much time, and I am picky about the games I play. I have a small group of titles to which I am very loyal, and rarely try to expand it. Although I understand Stardock's push for Impulse from a business standpoint, I currently have no desire or need to install it onto my computer. My belief is that any updates to any Gal Civ 2 title should be available on both Impulse and SDC. Since the majority of users have been upgrading on SDC, it seems self defeating to shut down that avenue of distribution right now. I would even say the same about Sins of a Solar Empire.

Impulse should be the sole distribution channel for new titles going forward, beginning with Political Machine. If and when there is a Gal Civ 3, I would have no argument about changing over to Impulse. But for now, I don't see why I should be forced to do that. I'm sure my demographic represents a small portion of this community, so I don't expect my thoughts to carry much weight, but I felt like voicing my opinion. I'm not knocking Stardock, I'm just saying what I would do if I were in their shoes.

I agree stykman...

I must admit I havn't enjoy reading the posts from people having trouble with impulse, especially that poor dude who said "this is the end for me," on account of his systems incompatability. I hope it has worked out for him now that SDC has been pulled back from the brink.

Sure bring on impulse... I'm sure most of us will get on eventually, but this "have to" business was a bit of a shock, not to mention boring. I'm glad you reconsidered.

... the poor dude is somewhat over 49 and still alive. He heared / read today in an european forum, that stardock finally had decided to distribute the patch also via SDC, and so he looked again into this forum. So all is well, nothing real worse
happens, thanks ubernaught.
And thanks to stardock for their new decision, also thanks for the guys which told their opinion here in this thread, personally I agree 100 % with the last post of stykman22 here.

Maybe the sound of my last post was a little bit too dramatically, that can happen with Sinatra sound in background, and worse foreign language skills.
I haven't tried to download the patch until now, will give it a chance tomorrow. The weather was to fine last days to sat in front of a pc. And frankly said, the nearby European Soccer Championship was also more attractive for me.

For now a good night from old europe or better said have a nice day.

You can disable the toolbar from msconfig -> StartUp -> Impulse Dock. That way it won't autoload when you enter windows.

Just Right Click anywhere on the Dock, uncheck "run at startup"

The whole deal with the Impulse thing was advertised as "wow, now you dont have to hassle with several different download applications, no cds etc". But in the end, all you are doing is replacing one download-app with another.. No difference from say Stardock Central, Gamersgate, Steam or even the horrible EA Downloader.

Yes it runs better, looks better, has better functions etc.. But its still just another download app that i never ever even open until i want to check if there's an update or not.
Why would i when i can just click the game-icons on my desktop, and why would i want to surf the forums in that application when i can just do the same in my webbrowser i already have stuff set up in?

And lastly, saying that you NEED to download Impulse in order to get the latest patch, is just what made me write this post. Yes i did download it, no it doesnt suck. But its still the same as every other app you "HAVE TO" download in order to get what you want.
A simple update-button ingame wouldnt be hard enough, would it?

I recently downloaded the new Impulse client and am having some trouble getting Gal Civ 2 to download or update as I get this error message: Conversion from type 'DBNull' to type 'Date' is not valid.
The other products (Sins, DA) seem to work perfectly it is just the original game which throws this error.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks.

Stardock -

Question - I have installed v.195.023 but in the opening screen when I start ToA it says v. 1.91 still. Also, when I start the game the starports are still the old graphics - I thought they had been updated. It makes me wonder if I really updated to v1.95.023 - but stardock central says it is. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Just want to make sure I am playing hte updated version because I am playing on an immense galaxy and want to make sure I am playing hte version with the research bug fixed.
