Software development in a consumer market..

I've been having a ball with ObjectDock Plus. I've got 4 different docks going on my desktop but you can barely tell because I have itty bitty tabs  on 3 of them.  The 4th dock I don't have docked to an edge but instead I have it activate when I put my mouse to the very bottom. The biggest glitch I've run into with it is that I can't drag and drop links to a dock (well I can but they don't work).  What I want to do is have my "favorite" websites as a series of tiny tabs over on the left edge of my screen.  I mostly use Keyboard LaunchPad for getting around my sites (Ctrl-Alt-1 for WinCustomize, 2 for Joeuser.com, 3 for Stardock, 4 for Neowin, and so forth).  But what I want to use the docks for is more "temporary" favorite websites. Ones that I want to check out later when I have more time but know I'll forget but don't want to have permanently in my "favorites" list.

BTW, if you've got a particularly clever ObjectDock Plus setup, take a screenshot and upload it and I'll try to feature some of them in my next WC blog.

One thing that ObjectDock Plus's availability has brought forward is an issue that affects most shareware developers and that is pricing.  Go to a shareware conference or just hang out with other shareware authors and the topic is sure to come up: Why does the same guy who happily pays $8 to watch "White Chicks" and spend $4 on pop corn or $18 on two pizzas turn around and bitch about paying $15 to $20 for a software product that took an immense amount of effort to create that they'll be able to make use of for years?

What bugged me the most was the idea that because we have had ObjectDock (freeware) available that we somehow have no right to make a plus version.  That somehow we're the greedy ones for wanting to be compensated for years of effort.  Rather than being thankful that we make a free program like ObjectDock used by hundreds of thousands of people, one that we continue to update for free, we get guff for putting out a Plus version.

There were also the people who felt ObjectDock should be part of Object Desktop. I could at least, philosophically, understand where they were coming from. I'm not sure at what point Object Desktop came to equal "All of Stardock's stuff in a single package for $50".  But my view is, anyone who's paid us $50 for Object Desktop is a customer and we're going to listen to their view point a lot more seriously than the kid who's never contributed anything back but feels entitled to call us greedy for making ObjectDock Plus.

The reason ObjectDock Plus isn't part of Object Desktop is very straight forward: Economics.   Object Desktop has something like a dozen and a half programs in it. For $50. And most of these programs are really quite powerful.. I could go on for hours about how DesktopX should be a $100 product on its own given the things it can do for corporations but we target power users and consumers instead so we have to price it appropriately.  The bottom line is that Object Desktop is a really really good deal.  And it's such a good deal that it's very tough to sustain it even as is at the price it is.

Personally, and correct me if I'm mistaken, I think half the coolness of Object Desktop is that many of the components get very frequent updates.  If you bought Object Desktop in say 1999, the main components in it have continually been updated in it year after year after year with more components being added over time.  I don't want to name specific products but I suggest checking out other desktop enhancement programs that have come out during that time and note how often they've been updated (or heck, when the last time they were updated).  Meanwhile, we've been cranking on DesktopX, WindowBlinds, WindowFX, IconPackager, and other pieces on a regular basis year after year after year. Heck, wait till you see ObjectBar 2.  And we're working on some other cool new things too. Point being, this coolness is only possible as long as Object Desktop is economically viable. It's not like we're driving around in Porsches or something. Things that don't remain viable end up fading away.

I think at the end of the day the question is simply are people glad we made ObjectDock Plus? Based on the reaction we're seeing, we think yes. If it hadn't been released the way it is, it would never have been made.

Speaking of new stuff, later this Fall we hope to finally come out with the beta of ThinkDesk. This is an entirely new suite of products. Where Object Desktop is about extending your desktop, ThinkDesk is about managing your information.  Pricing will be the same as Object Desktop (though unlike Object Desktop the price will probably go up once it leaves beta). It'll be XP only and we'll be focusing a lot of energy on .NET features.

Meanwhile in Italy, UK, and US where the distributed DesktopX team works, version 2.2 is nearly done.  I think a new beta of it showed up on Object Desktop tonight along with IconX which is now separate (but if you have both installed, the IconX tab will show up in DesktopX). We learned from that WinCustomize poll that lots of people had no idea what IconX was. That needs to change as it's (in my biased opinion) one of the coolest programs on Windows.

So that's all for now. Gotta re-setup my crashed laptop. It's running plain Luna right now! Eeew!

I have ObjectDesktop and I just bought ObjectDock. It's sweet... Great Job!
There are a few quirks, but I fully understand it's still beta.

I checked out the ObjectDock forum last night and I have to say I was impressed with the quick and professional responses by the Dock members/team. That says a lot about the sincerity of the team for putting out a quality product.

Keep up the great work!

Brad,

The reason why no one knows what IconX is ... is that it's not listed in any place I can find on Stardock.com, nor did you bother to link to information about it in your blog! I literally just spent half an hour looking for information on it on Stardock.com and found a passing reference to "IconX enhanced icons", but with no link to what that meant.

Please, more links. This is the web, after all, and you should remember that you should never assume that everyone is familiar with what you're talking about. The one time you take it for granted is the time you'll lose out on a customer who thought something sounded interesting enough to buy, but couldn't be quickly shown where to get it. Links are how you do that. Link EVERYTHING.

I'm a long-time ObjectDesktop user, though I've slowly returned my UI to being less about information all over distracting me and more to just the basics. But sometimes, I like to play with the toys, and no being able to find the information, savvy as I am, really bothers me.

IconX hasn't been released as a stand alone entity yet. Hence, no links.

I know this is more of an ObjectDesktop question, but it relates to ObjectDockPlus. I asked this question in another of your posts, but it never got answered; probably due to my sarcastic tone.

With Dock+ being released and having a tabbed interface, is Tab LaunchPad being abandoned? Features that I would have expected to be part of a Tab LaunchPad 2.0 are now a part of Dock+, that being the tabbed bars that are similar to DragThing for the Mac.

I found the quote that made me think that there would be a Tab LaunchPad 2.0 here Link. In one of the comments you (?) respond:

It'll be on its own. But we may use some of the technology being developed in it to create a new version of Tab LaunchPad.

So is Tab LaunchPad getting an overhaul, getting only minor fixes, or is it being abandoned?

Tab LaunchPad has been updated this year.  We are also discussing what features we want to put into a Tab LaunchPad 2.0.

A Tab LaunchPad 2.0 won't be = ObjectDock. But it will continue to be enhanced over time. That's the plan anyway.

Thanks for the answer. I guess my expectations of TLP having DragThing like abilities has been squashed. I'll have to download CoolTabs to get a feel for whether or not I like docked tabs or not. If I do I'll purchase ObjectDock Plus... customer loyalty and Stardock's track record.

Brad: I'm wondering if you took my comments in your previous post to heart. What I typed and this post are very similar!

"BTW, my pizza at Poppa John's costs $15. A movie is $10. The pizza is gone in about 30 minutes and your movie is over in less than 2 hours. For $15 you can get a bunch of Stardock apps that last you years and it's something you are using ON A DAILY BASIS. I'd say that's a lot of bang for your buck. Your pizza is in and out of your body in about 24 hours. Heh."

As a software developer and user, I can offer the some insight for one of the main problems I have with putting out money for programs vs. rental and food. The difference for me is I pay cash for a dvd rental or pizza, and if I pay with my credit card, I'm there to see what they're doing. It's easier to part with $15 in cash than to use a credit card or check to pay for software. The purchase seems so much bigger when I pay with my credit card, not to mention the paranoia of trusting a company with my credit card or bank account info, etc that you'll never see. Just my 2 cents.

Evening all, (Glancing outside just to make sure)

Being new to Object Desktop and having just purchased it, I'm still new to all of the components and what's hip and what's not.

IconX - Of all of the objects that make up DesktopX, I've seen the least amount of "information". Where ever I look, I see tons and tons of downloads for IconX, but rarely have I seen any exclamation of what's so hot abut IconX, until I just read about it now, due to the column above. F/X is also another sleeper that I hadn't even realized I had purchased. I think during the install, if you had a page, listing all of the components and how they relate and interact, would educate and have users make more use of the individual components. Just my 25 cents worth (inflation). At first, I wasn't sure if Wincustomize and StarDock were related or two seperate entities as well.. I probably would have been more willing to purchase a subscription from Wincustomize, had I know (at that time) it was not only supported by Stardock, but emphasized as "The Place to Go" site. It was a little confusing when I first arrived at StarDock centrall.. That piece is free.

I'm loving it more and more, though I think my wife think's I must be doing something "wrong" as much time as I spend reviewing all of the pieces at wincustomize.. lol..

Keep it growing and Keep The Quality Going.

Guys,

What was the reasoning behing having CursorXp an extra component and not included in DesktopX? I just realized this as I was trying to install some Cursor downloads..

Have you thought about having a "suite" that includes EVERYTHING?? So what if it's $69 or so, I would have rather done that, then purchase $49+$10+10 + whatever.. Though the math is the same, it's the same theory as the pizza. Cash is easy to spend - especialy on all the soda's I drink, but I'd rather get yelled at just ONCE for spending money on software by my wife, then three times for seeing things I wanted later..

So fo all us "Married Men" - do us a favor, and have a "Pizza with the works!" One tongue lashing is definately enough.. (turning my head and cocking my ear toward the stairs...My hand darts out faster than light, hits all three monitor power buttons, and my body from years of experience, backflips out of my computer chair, lands in the sofa, MCSE 2003 book in hand, and I quietly say "Hi Honey" as my wife reaches the last step to the bonus room..Safe!! - but my heart stops, as a small quiet voice from my 5 year old girl says politely "Daddy, can I use your computer now? Now that you aren't using it???"
ICE SHARDS fly across the room out of what looked like an innoncent pair of "wifely" eyes..

Keep it up guys! Can't wait till I create a nice desktopx policy for my wife...heh heh..
