WindowBlinds 5 beta 1 (4.90) has been released on Object Desktop (it's only available if you have Object Desktop presently).

UPDATE: 4.9A now up -- support for older nVidia cards added!

Release Notes:
------------

This build is the first beta for the upcoming WindowBlinds 5. There are going to be some rough edges as it gets out in wider distribution, so please be as detailed as possible with any feedback.

Requirements:
Windows XP.  Does not support Windows 2000 or Windows XP 64-bit (64-bit version will come later though).

The Big One - Per-pixel borders on XP

-Per-pixel (alpha-blended) titlebars and borders. It's been an internal struggle over the last year or more as to whether we would be able to implement these on Windows XP with reasonable performance. We have, _if_ you have a relatively modern video card and good drivers for it.

What does that mean? Your video card needs to have hardware support for alphablending and a driver with SHADEBLENDCAPS support implemented and functional. ATI Radeon's 9000+ or later should be fine, NVIDIA GeForce 6000+ or later should be fine, and even chips that you wouldn't expect like the integrated Intel 82852/82855 GM/GME run fine with it.

Some boards are not going to work with this release, though we hope to be able to work with the driver vendors to find a workaround. GeForce 4600/5200 and related seem to be a common trigger for that (like they are losing the alpha channel for the images). The top/bottom borders with per-pixel skins seem oversaturated, but the left/right borders are working (and you can click "through" the top border).

Yes, you can put shadows on your borders and make them part of the skin. See the Arrow sample that is included. The shadows are part of the skin.

Other new features:

By Per-Pixel, we mean elements that have full alpha blending support (anti-alias themselves to whatever graphical elements are around it).

  • -No wbload.exe process. The binary is still there for installing skins.
  • -Per-pixel menus
  • -Per-pixel taskbar
  • -Per-pixel progress bar overlay
  • -Per-pixel "Please wait" dialog
  • -New wbconfig previews
  • -New skincast features (not in this build)
  • -Lots of optimizations under the hood.

When reporting problems, please check the Troubleshooting section of WBConfig. Select the text with the left-mouse button and press Ctrl-C to copy the text. Please include that when reporting any visual-bugs along with a screenshot (cropped if appropriate for size).

There is an updated SkinStudio beta available to Object Desktop customers with support for creating per-pixel skins. You must still include the non-pp images for systems that don't support the new frames, so the skins should still work with WB 4.x.

Note: To change skins you have to load WBConfig now.  There's no system tray icon yet.  You can change skins from display properties (msstyles now show up side by side with WindowBlinds skins btw) or you can put a short-cut to WindowBlinds config somewhere handy like on the Quick Launch or use Keyboard LaunchPad to assign a hot-key to bring it up.

Enjoy!

Hello everybody!
My rundll32.exe always crashes, when i try to open the display settings (in order to select a new background image or wahtever...).

WindowBlinds 5 BETA Troubleshooting Report:

WindowBlinds is installed correctly on this PC.

Your machine supports per pixel borders on WindowBlinds skins.

If you suffer visible corruption (overbright) on the frames and have a NVIDIA board then please be aware this is a NVIDIA bug. It has been seen on GeForce 4 cards and some FX series cards.

Video Information

You have one monitor in total.

(Fujitsu Siemens C17-3) 1 is attached to RADEON 9800 PRO (Omega 2.6.25)

'RADEON 9800 PRO Secondary (Omega 2.6.25)' also exists as device '\\.\DISPLAY2', but is not attached to the desktop.

'NetMeeting driver' also exists as device '\\.\DISPLAYV1', but is not attached to the desktop and is a mirror driver.

'RDPDD Chained DD' also exists as device '\\.\DISPLAYV2', but is not attached to the desktop and is a mirror driver.

PLEASE report all this information when submitting a problem report, especially anything related to per-pixel skinning. We don't know what's in that Dell you bought last July or the notebook the office gave you. Per-pixel skinning requires your drivers to at least claim to support the functions needed for it.

Click on the change skin color text in the skin preview. I thought it was just sample text.

Custom color is slightly hard to find true. I didn't see a tooltip either. Its a little icon in the lower left on the skin view section of WBconfig. The other button I wasn't sure what it was either, but it seems to go back to the skin you had previously selected or are currently using.

I had no trouble installing WB5, though I did unload WB before starting install, which may have helped I don't know, just basing it on previous messages. Its really a nice program. I like the Aura theme the best of the new ones, though not a big fan of white text, it shows up ok considering the shadowing.

Works perfectly here

Same problem here as ImANicePirate and Last Triarii. Everything is installed correctly (it would appear), but no skins at all. I thought maybe it was because the Themes service was disabled, so I reenabled it and started it, but still no dice.

I'm redownloading WB5 right now, and we'll see what happens with it. I can't wait to use WB5!

I have an appeareance issue with WB5. To the left of the show & hide icons button on the task bar there is a quarter inch on the task bar not skinned. I am using a black skin right now and I have a white spot about quarter inch just sitting there pretty as you please.

Any news when this will be available to windowblinds-only subscribers?

With yesterday's later release of 4.90b.003 The issues I was having with logonuiX.exe Application Error and crash has been resolved. The right click and double click user overrides now function just fine for me with all skins as well w00t!! You go Stardock (That has got to be the quickest patch I have ever seen from any software company)

So, at this point The Bad and The Ugly can be chucked from my last post

One minor issue I am seeing with some skins (GT3 for instance) now is that in the Stardock Central window also in the main window of Spybbot - Search & Destroy, BOINC Manager (for Seti@Home), Windows Sound Recorder (like I ever use it lol), Volume Controls, 3d Studio Max 6, Photoshop/Imageready CS2, Macromedia Studio 8 Programs the title bar graphics and or horizontal scroll bar images are being rendered a second time behind the file menu when the window is resized. I haven't noticed this in any other program window at this point.

This occurs on both laptop with go6800 and Desktop with fx 5700le

Have installed on two machines.

First which is a Dell optiplex, 2.6ghz P4 1Gb Ram Winxpsp2, GForce FX5200 with 78.01 drivers - works flawlessly. installed cleanly. no problems at all

second, Shuttle XPC 2.6Ghz P4 1Gb Ram, Winxpsp2, Radeon 9600 128mb Ram Catylyst 5.7 drivers (machine is used as media centre, Theatertek 2, DVICO Fusion HDTV ver 3.11)
WB5 will simply not install properly. 4.6 installs and works as expected. uninstall 4.6, download 4.9b install completes but does not request a reboot. reboot WB5 partially opens then hangs. WB config button does not appear in display properties. unistall WB5 everthing returns to normal. The above has been repeated 6 times!! (including completely downloading freshly each time) one complete reinstall from a cloned clean ghost image (without any trace of any stardock products, so WB5 had a complete clean install) same result. I am presuming some form of conflict with the ATI catylst control centre. The installation will not allow me to run the troubleshooting screen. Pity because when it works WB5 really does appear to speed up screen drawing or some other such illusion but whatever it is very impressive.

many thanks

My Results of the update were identical to yours. Everything seems to be working with the beta version, however, a backup of the prior version would have been nice. I have a Dell Latitude, P4, 1GB Ram, and an nVidia GeForce4 440 Go 64MB Graphics card, so I was a bit nervous updating, especially after getting that "unable to archive" error. Hopefully someone will have an explaination to our issues. I just wanted to let you know that you are not the only person with that problem. Good luck and take care. Sincerely, kool one.

rustyb22: Please ensure you have the very latest build of SDC installed as some earlier ones tried to do something with a WB dll which caused SDC to crash out during the install.

I like the WB5 beta release, but I have two issues. The bottom quarter of the task/system bar is off the screen. If I turn off the Basic Settings Task Bar option, then the task bar is the correct size, sans skin. I am running on an HP zd7260 laptop with a 1680x1050 screen resolution (changing resolution doesn't help). I never had this problem with WB4. I also noticed that my graphics CPU fan is now on all of the time. I presume that the GPU is doing more work under WB5 than it did under WB4. I don't mind when I am plugged into an outlet, but this is a real issue when I shift to battery. I need an option that forces WB5 to some lower GPU usage even if I lose some effects when ever I shift to battery operation.

Keep up the excellent work!
