Quoting Frogboy,

Quoting wbino3556,

Whats your thoughts that true artists suffer when ai art is used to replace them?

True artists will end up using this as a tool.  Stardock is using AI art a ton AND we are hiring artists as fast as we can.

Well the "AI" is trained with billions of works of true artists so everything it really does is mix and match other peoples work without permission. There even is a site where You can proof, if Your work has already been used. https://haveibeentrained.com

People even found artifacts of signatures on their generated pics.

That's not how it works.

It's not mixing and matching anything.  It is trained by looking at images and there is no "permission" necessary for publicly posted art.  Real artists look at other people's work all the time.

It looks at as much art as possible to categorize it but it's not "stealing".  Read up on how stable diffusion actually works.

Artists complaining about AI training is about the same thing as when programmers complained about compilers.  For instance, I used to be very good at writing assembly code but compilers allowed people to write plain text (high level programming languages) and the machine compiled it into code.

AI is been a thing on other professions for a long, long time now and it's accelerating.  It's going to take a lot more writing jobs than artist jobs in the near term.

Also, "artifacts of signatures" again has to do with the AI believing the squiggly stuff is related part of the key word for say, a desk or an alien.

At the simplest level, the AI has an understanding of what a hat looks like.  An image of random noise is created and then the noise is removed until something that matches what it thinks a hat looks like shows up.

Early on, you ended up with really wacky results.  Asking for a cat would result in nightmare looking cats but over time, the model has gotten better and better.  But you will never, ever get 2 images exactly the same from it.

Even if every single artist on ArtStation opted out from having their art looked at, it wouldn't really matter.  There is, literally, thousands of years of art out there for the AI to be trained on just like there are thousands of years (or at least many hundreds) of books available to train AI on.

AI models to the same with text.  Consider ChatGPT:

There is no Bill Burr joke like that.

But it can get a lot weirder:

Here I ask:

Brad Wardell:
Write a Harry Potter sequel in which Harry Potter has become a homeless drifter on the run from Terminator robots from the future and a robot driving instructor whose best friend is a talking pie.

ChatGPT: Harry Potter sat huddled against a wall in the dark alleyway, trying to stay warm in the cold November rain. It had been years since he had left Hogwarts, and everything had gone wrong since then. He had lost touch with all of his friends, and he had become a homeless drifter, forced to roam the streets in search of shelter and food.

But Harry's problems went far beyond homelessness and poverty. He was on the run from something far more sinister: Terminator robots from the future. These advanced, killing machines had been sent back in time to eliminate Harry, and they would stop at nothing to accomplish their mission.

Harry had encountered the Terminators before, and he knew firsthand just how ruthless and relentless they could be. He had narrowly escaped their grasp time and time again, but he knew it was only a matter of time before they caught up to him.

As he sat in the alleyway, trying to stay out of sight, Harry couldn't help but wonder how he had ended up in this mess. He had once been the Boy Who Lived, the hero who had defeated the Dark Lord and brought peace to the wizarding world. Now, he was a hunted man, barely able to stay one step ahead of his pursuers.

Just then, a strange noise caught Harry's attention. It was a faint humming sound, growing louder and louder as it approached. Harry tensed, ready to bolt at a moment's notice. But as the source of the noise came into view, he couldn't help but feel a sense of relief.

It was a robot driving instructor, and he was accompanied by a talking pie.

"Hey there, Harry," the robot said in a friendly tone. "I'm Bob, and this is my best friend, Pie. We heard about your situation and we thought we could help."

Harry stared at the robot and the talking pie in disbelief. This was the last thing he had expected. But as strange as it seemed, he knew that he couldn't turn down their offer. He was desperate for any help he could get.

"Thank you," Harry said gratefully. "I don't know what to say. I never thought I'd see the day when I'd be saved by a robot and a talking pie."

Bob chuckled. "Don't worry about it, Harry. We've all been in tough spots before. But now, let's get out of here before those Terminators catch up to us. We've got a long road ahead, but we'll make it through this together."

And with that, Harry, Bob, and Pie set off on their journey, determined to stay one step ahead of the Terminators and find a way to stop them once and for all.

This is how AI works. It's not mixing sampling. It's not sampling anything. It's recognizing patterns and learning from them.  The learning isn't that different from how a human learns.

Thanks Brad for taking the time for this explanation. Got some things clearer for me.

Brad....somewhere in the world there is an Architect cringing in horror.  [me]

AI really has a hard time with architectural detail in perspective...

The scary thing about the AI stuff is that it's improving at a crazy exponential rate.

For example, today, I'm working on GalCiv IV and I'm using Copilot (an AI extension that helps write code).

Now, I knew this thing was good at code completion but it also auto-generated the flavor text based solely on patterns on how the other flavor text was written.

So when I write:

Conversation_Drengin_De [it interupts here]

it then completes it with this:

Conversation_Drengin_Demand_Surrender, "It is over for you. We have crushed your puny forces and will bring our shock troops to your cities if you don't surrender now!"

All based on having other events called Conversation_Race_Demand_Surrender in the project and knowing the type of writing style that races called Drengin have.

This was this morning.  I was stunned.

Decided to give this I try to get a new avatar.

Started with this image I found on the web a long time ago.

The prompt was: Purple robed wizard sitting at tree computer

Several results

This is the one I liked the best, none of them really did the tree computer how I wanted.

Tried refining the image.

Think I'll go with this one for now. But I'll try improving it later.

Charming.  I'd love to study your demographic to learn more about what makes someone think it's acceptable behavior to type that online.
