Galactic Civilizations I

Spent my evening today trying out the various Galactic Civilizations versions over the years. Each has their own particular strengths.  If you don’t have the original Galactic Civilizations for Windows, I highly recommend picking it up. It has a real “indie” charm to it.

Now, the GalCiv III screenshot here is of the alpha. The final version will look a lot better still. Even now though, it’s remarkable how much better it looks. Having a “retina” UI system capability (i.e. different DPI UIs based on resolution) is going to come in handy.  You can kind of tell that GalCiv II was designed during a time before high resolution displays.

Nice snapshots through time. I remember both of the predecessors and can't wait for the next.

It's too bad you don't have shots of GC for OS2. That would truly be nostalgic.

Yea, I need to set up an OS/2 VM.

This is what GalCiv II alpha looked like:

In this case, it means the original GalCiv team was 1 artist and 2 programmers basically.

@DARCA, in a more general way Indie is a short for Independant.

As for the screenshots, I find the GalCiv 2 alpha quite interesting. I actually like the look of it, more organic. But it reminds me of a Car dashboard a little too much.

Im not sure but I may prefer the GalCiv 2 botton oriented UI over a side column like in the GalCiv III alpha, ( or galciv 1 for that matter). It made for that widescreen galactic look that highlights the vastness of space. The new UI style, might play better though so I shall see. That Is just a first impression I have.

Nice! thanks for doing that.

Indie is a euphemism for Independent. Basically means independent from big studios, but in reality means independent of big funds

Same thing it usually means: independently funded and published.

The term can get a bit awkward with games, though, since the landscape in that industry is a bit different from other industries. For example, Sins of A Solar Empire isn't an indie game, while Galactic Civilizations 3 is.

Um, I don't think Stardock would be considered an indie company anymore...  I know they aren't HUGE, but they recently mentioned having 7 games being developed at once, if I recall correctly.  That's a bit beyond the scope of indie.

That is if you consider 'indie' = small team making games in their garage. Technically, VALVE is an indie

That definition is a bit like AAA. Eventhough there are a generally understood idea of what it means, it cannot be exactly defined.

GalCiv is ancient today just like Master of Magic. You see that right away. GalCiv II and III UI look very close though.

I don't think GC2 and GC3's interfaces look close. You can tell that they are from the same series, yes, but there's so much difference. The details of the star's atmosphere. The hexes. There's not a single button in the same place, and usually they're not even close. Did you notice the semi-transparent build list? Yeah, they're pretty different alright. But they have the same DNA.
