Brad Wardell's site for talking about the customization of Windows.

I’ll be giving some demos of Elemental this week at PAX.  Visit http://pax.stardock.com for an official schedule.

The 30 minute presentation will be broken into two parts.  The first part will talk about the game itself.  What our goals are. Inspirations for the game (Master of Magic, XCom, Civilization, etc.) and what makes Elemental new and different.

Here are some in-game screenshots.

As pretty as this is, the thing to remember here is that this can be run on a 2 year old laptop (non gamer laptop) and still look like this with 30fps.  How this this possible? Well, part 2 will talk more about the technology underneath Elemental that is new but in short: a 3D engine designed from scratch as a PC-only engine for land based strategy games (as opposed to FPS).

Full free camera to zoom in to see little people or zoom out and see the world in a single motion.  When I visited the game magazines, a comment that kept coming up is that I was able to demo this on my ThinkPad T400. No slouch but certainly not a gaming laptop.

When you zoom in, it almost looks like some sort of role playing game.  But as the demo will demonstrate, that’s intentional – your role is the sovereign of one of the kingdoms that you and your friends used to wreak havoc in when you played D&D or Fantasy Hero or what have you.

Zooming out a little bit shows that cities aren’t icons on a map but grow based on your decisions.  The land is fully morphable via magical spells (Which I’ll be demoing).

More to come…

That looks very promising! Particularly pleased that I will be able to play it on my only computer, a two-year-old laptop.

Will you soon be showing off not only graphics, but some of the core concepts (how shards are controlled, how influence is expanded, how combat mechanics work, etc.)?

Nice screenies! As I see, Brad must love Peter Jackson's LotR movies [who doesn't?! ]....I mean take a look at the second screenshot. The Black Gate anyone?

PS. Those yellow grass tiles on screenshot #1. are bugged. Some of them -for example- are "hanging" on trees. [Upper right corner of the image..] Yes it's an alpha version I know.

Only the first one for me. Comical dwarves and uber-acrobat elves of doom are not of my liking. Aesthetics are a different thing tough.

Screenshots look fine, but am still confused by the fact that some trees cast shadows and other dont ? Are shadows  baked so you have that one tree type with shadows and others are still work in progress ?

If I have understood it well, in the Beta we will not see these cool screens.

So, what are we going to see when zooming in?, only units and structures over the cloth map?

I only hope that the Beta doesn´t delay too much, I'm getting very very anxious waiting for it.

In the early betas, that is correct. We'll see the cloth map, and... whatever they put on the cloth map.

In some later beta the 3d engine will be turned on and we'll get to see the shinies.

My computer is a 2 years old laptop....Intel intergrated Video chipset...

Look like this is the only decent game I can play till the end of life of my computer.

That's one of the best things about Stardock games:  I dont' have to upgrade my computer to get a great looking and playing game, I can play them for years on my crappy old computer!

you need to make these empty hills to be automatically converted to rocky mountains with jagged edges. Simple heightmap doesn't look cool.

Crap, and I just got rid of my 2-year-old laptop! Well, granted it technically didn't have a CPU anymore, but still.....

very nice

In the second screenshot it appears like the fallen have formed an alliance with some ogres, or is that an ogre city?

From what is shown so far do i prefre the fallen art style, this while I normally play more with the good factions.

I like that the land will be morphable. Now i can finally wreak havoc on my enemies lands like i always wanted to in MoM.

Coooooolllos! I don't have the time or energy to do one of my screenie analyses right now, but several things spring immediately to mind:

There appear to be ogres wandering around inside the city. What are they, and what are they doing there?
Looks like the evil terrein is still more or less the same..... doesn't look so much volcanic now as it just looks dead.

the ogre is gaurding(?) the gate to the enemy faction (all the dudes behind the wall), the awsome part is what he does to THEM

It was a great demo by the way (I was at PAX friday and half of saturday). And I kind of want to start beta now, (Yes i will risk my health).

The zooming works amazingly well, but they have yet to show tactical battles (not in the PAX build)

I nuked that ogre and his entire town with a Volcano spell.

It was a lot of fun to play even the early Alpha of the game they had on display. Tomorrow night I intend to post a bunch of pictures that I got of Elemental from PAX while the Stardock people are still enjoying a long flight. Though I'm disappointed I haven't won an awesome Stardock backpack yet!

Edit: Added in a couple pictures I took.
