and how it will affect Galciv users

Impulse_App_MyDesktopImpulse is Stardock's next-generation digital distribution platform.  On June 17th it got its initail release.  Next week, Phase 2 will be launched which will add a bunch of new features to the mix.

For Galactic Civilizations II users, it opens the door for some continued development possibilities. For instance, we would like to make use of Impulse's achivements and rankings features to better support the Metaverse.

Galactic Civilizations II: v2.0 (for Dark Avatar and Twilight users) is due on October 1, 2008.  We think users will be shocked at how much development time has gone into this free update to improve the espionage and dozens of other elements of the game.

In November, we anticipate announcing the fantasy strategy game (no promises though) with the beta opening up next Spring for that.

WTB more GC2 info as well, we don't need to know everything, but maybe atleast a bit more than just "enhanced espionage" ?

I figure that since they have been so quiet, they are really really busy. I think I'd rather be in the dark about the to be announced features than stop someone from working to compile a list in a readable format and post it.

Don't have to be exact or ruin the surprise effect for us all, simple hints may just be enough.
They are working at it, true... i'd recommend a tiny break of (what) maybe 75 seconds flats to write something, anything to drive us nuts over the *new* features & options.

- I want the Editors perfected to some degree (DA compatibility would be a must)
- Shipyard with green & blue hardpoints, precision interfacing, etc.
- Automated constructors.
And, what -- else.

I can wait, also.
But, it'd be fun to catch a glimpse at least.

We're working on...a feature that people have been asking for since Dreadlords 1.0, some new governors, Espionage that let you spy passivly (read: without disabling an planetary improvement), some new galaxy setup options, a new ship style, updated manual (for 2.0, the finished Twilight one will be out shortly), etc etc.

Cari and I will be (attempting to) post journals tomorrow, so I'll try and go into more details then (I need to make sure any announcements don't step on the toes in marketing).

~looks at pages of things, but one stands out~ Interesting...

some new governors

Oooooh, hopefully of the planetary flavor.

Espionage that let you spy passivly (read: without disabling an planetary improvement)

Hrm, so the DL version for passive and then DA for aggressive? Or perhaps the placement of spies on empty planetary tiles for the passive placement.....GAH I think I preferred not knowing, mind ran less LOL.

some new galaxy setup options

Hrm...distance from races slider? UP voting allowed checkbox?

a new ship style

If it's not just another size catagory...you got my attention for sure. Another size (bigger) would be cool, but mind-blowing would be a 'different' class all together. Or are you talking Arnorian/Dread Lord ship styles?

Hrm, perhaps I'll take some sleeping pills to knock me out until tomorrow afternoon to make this transition quicker. (Note: kids, don't abuse prescription or over the counter drugs).

Yeah, I spies do currently seem more like saboteurs - although I think I was hoping for something entirely different from the current system, which is rather boring.

I think it would be good if for Impulse, when a user looks at a product, there are links to previews and reviews. Also, people can watch live feeds of video previews and reviews from various review websites and also user/gamer feedbacks. I know that for Galciv 2 and Sins, it might not be necessary, but i do notice some of the games on SD central are from indie developers. I am assuming that lists of available purchases will be migrated to Impulse. If i am a casual gamer and i started to use Impulse and i see these lists of games, it would be handy to have all the reviews and previews info handy to help me to decide. Some of the games i try to find other reviews for, i can't even find them online.

Such features if implemented also for all other stardock products would also enhanced advertised potentials for the products as well. I know that there are tons of reviews about windows blinds, and other stardock products. But i think having such feature would definitely set Impulse apart from Steam.

I doubt it would happen on an update, but a couple of different spy units would be great eh?

Maybe an emissary unit you could send to an opponent to boost their production/income/research on a tile and gain a diplomatic +

Back to Impulse 2...I seem to have slipped into Yor space this week. It seems to be moving along sooooo slowly.

Looking forward to Impulse 2 so I can try it out along with TA. (I've been holding off buying the upgrade until Impulse 2.) Will it (hopefully) be early in the week?

That was easy! As we are used to get these journals, it is just normal for (most of) us to blow off a little steam when they haven't shown up here for awhile!

But, you're absolutely right either way... a structured (and progressive) teasing or outright reveals would always be welcomed - no matter when or how.

Thanks a lot for taking that precious time off 'working' duties, boogie.

1) If there is just a simple 'Intuitive Research' (maybe even some AI driven processing transfered to automated human player options) governor, i'll certainly use it.

2) I hope they are trying to insert 'primary components & models with a double dose of hull/trim color switchers' while a new style is being considered since this feature alone would allow HUGE design potential and total control over the entire mesh and how any ships are assembled.

One question regarding Impulse:

With this quick load option, it seems my complaints about Impulse have been solved. What do you lose when you quickload?

on Aug 22, 2008

For anyone keeping track, I appologize for the lack of those journals (PAX is next week, and loose ends took longer than expected).

I'll prioritize that 2.0 journal for Monday

Back to the Impulse chat.

What do you lose when you quickload?

You lose nothing. The fastload option simply keeps a process running, but dormant(uses about 4MB on my system). This allows Impulse to start almost instantaniously. If you disable the fast start option in preferences it will also disable the process being kept running, but Impulse will load a slower. I noticed the newest version still loads faster than previous versions even with fastload disabled.
