Frogboy's Articles In Ashes Dev Journals

Greetings! Spring is here and there's lots to talk about. So let's do this!

## Multiplayer population ##

While Ashes of the Singularity is primarily a single player game, we are concerned about the multiplayer population.  While people at the lower ranks are having no problems finding people, it gets harder (meaning longer) to find a match the higher up you go.  This is a real problem.

What we are doing:

Use the Escalation browser:...

I’d like to introduce you to Callum McCole.  You’ll be hearing about him a lot in the coming months as I have asked him to take an ever great role in helping me on design elements of Ashes of the Singularity.  He runs the popular RTS YouTube channel, General’s Gentlemen.

As an RTS player of many years, I have often lamented when game developers fail to make the most use of the RTS community when it comes to design and balance that can be helpful both for the expert...

In Total Annihilation there’s a map called Caldera’s rim.  It’s a huge naval map with bits of islands in it.  That’s where I want us to eventually get in terms of battlefield flexibility.

Check these screenshot from a mod of Total Annihilation:

Let’s break things down into bite sized chunks to understand what we have today.   We want Ashes to become the ultimate RTS game There are a lot of things we have to do to get from wher...

The first update is out

During development of Escalation a number of good ideas came up but we didn’t have time to get them in before release.

This afternoon we released version 2.01.  You can read the full changelog here:

Fall is here in the northern hemisphere. Time to migrate to Australia!

Here's what's new…

## Version 1.5 ##

I am hoping that version 1.5 will arrive before Halloween. It's going to be tight. Lots of work going on. I'll outline below some of the focus.

## UI ##

According to the Steam data, 28% of our players are playing at below 1920x1080 and the text and such looks awful. Unreadable imo. We are updating how the the game is displaye...

PCGamesN has an exclusive preview of Stardock’s upcoming expansion pack to Ashes of the Singularity called Escalation.

IF I had a time machine, which I don’t…yet…I wish we could have called the game just Escalation. I love that title for an RTS.

Anyway check it out here:

The goal: Create the biggest scale real-time strategy game everAshes of the Singularity is a real-time strategy game set in the not-so-distant future where a single person can control thousands of constructs (the distant descendants of today’s drones) in order to conquer an entire world.

The world is broken up into regions with each region containing various resources that players capture and can then build up defenses, exploit the resources within and use as a staging area to con...

As anyone playing online must have noticed by now, we’ve basically doubled our user base in June. So that’s good.

Version 1.2 was a pretty big deal for helping make Ashes a more mainstream RTS.  I say more but I won’t say mainstream.  As a practical matter, 40% of the user base doesn’t have the hardware to play Ashes so we’ll always take a bit of a hit in terms of player base and of course user reviews from people who have older systems that won’t...

Note: This text is transcipted from Haalee.  If you have not already finished  the campaign of Ashes of the Singularity, Episode 1, there are spoilers.

[Spoiler Warnings]

Hello little bird.

You have been told a lot about me. Lies. Contrary to what you may have heard, I do not wish the destruction of the Post-Human Coalition. There are barely over 100 of them. I seek an end to the prospect of 8 billion human beings on Earth ascending.

Lots to talk about this month!

## Version 1.2 is a pretty big deal ##

From 1.0 through 1.13 the game has been operating on the Nitrous engine that was built during early access.  For those of interested in how games are made, think of a game has two pieces: The engine which is 90% of the work and the “game” which is a thin icing on top of the engine.  1...

A few topics I wanted to address based on forum feedback.

Re lore:  This is something that matters a lot to us.   Hopefully some of you check out Dawn of the Singularity. It is really really good.

David Simpson, who is arguably the master of the singularity genre with his Post-Human series spent 2 years on this.  It's where Mac and Haalee and everyone else came from.

Re Deluxe campaign:  This will internally be done...

Another week has passed and thus another update.

NEW UNIT: PHC Athena The new PHC Athena will be going out shortly.  This won’t be DLC but rather an update to the base game.

The PHC Athena was designed by Haalee, one of the architects of the PHC.  To build it, she created a new entity called Athena to specialize in militarized constructs.

As some of you know, the PHC did not originally have arm...

So here we are with this amazing new, 4th-generation RTS engine.

If you’re an RTS fan, when was the last RTS engine made before Ashes.  Not RTS game. I mean engine.  I’m trying to think how many years it’s been.  Each iteration becomes more expensive to make.  There is little patience for a new game to implement the niceties that mature engines have developed.

So let’s look at the Pros and cons of the Ashes of the Singularity (technologically):
